Are you the owner of a sole trader business? Then you will receive a new VAT identification number from the Tax Authorities. The nine digits, which were first equal to your citizen service number (BSN), are now random numbers. Everything else remains the same.

The Tax Authorities had to adjust the number, because according to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) the use of the citizen service number in the VAT identification number was contrary to the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG). Owners of sole traders therefore all receive a new VAT identification number.

As a result, you must adjust your invoices, letterhead, internet site and other means of communication that you use for business contacts before January 1, 2020.

This also applies to your administration software.

You must, however, continue to use the old VAT identification number to make the VAT return and in further contacts with the tax authorities.
